Week 2, Column 2 - "More Imperfect Unions"
SPEAKER - Ross Douthat
- Possibly Republican and/or conservative (judging by amount of suggestions to liberals and lack of suggestions to conservatives, assuming he only sees the wrong in the opposing side)
OCCASION - New research made on American mobility causing the same political discussion
AUDIENCE - Both liberals and conservatives
PURPOSE - To offer suggestions to both political sides(liberals and conservatives) to end the reoccurring political argument between the two
SUBJECT - The correlation "between two-parent families and upward mobility" and the different views about it from a liberal and conservative point of view
TONE - Annoyed with both sides's (mainly liberals) being so stubborn and repeating the same discussion
In the article More Imperfect Unions, journalist Ross Douthat explains liberals's and conservatives's contrasting views. His main focus is the opinions on the correlation between married parents and their economic situation. At first, Douthat tells the reader about the annoying debate history between the two groups. The topic is then introduced to the reader by giving a clear explanation of the two opposite views. Douthat adds to his topic's credibility by including past history from both sides. After clarifying the topic, Douthat offers suggestions to both political sides on ways to end this never-ending argument. Although his republican views shine through, this article should be read by all Americans. To keep both political parties at peace, Americans must take time to research. By doing so, the nation can change for the better.
